On Tuesday in Asaba, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State welcomed the Torch of Unity from the National Sports Commission. This event is linked to the upcoming 22nd National Sports Festival planned for Abeokuta in Ogun State.

Represented by his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, the governor highlighted the significance of harmony and cohesion, emphasizing that sporting events have consistently served as a unifying force in Nigeria.

Oborevwori encouraged the Delta State athletes, who are the reigning champions, to meticulously prepare for the competition and embrace the essence of excellence as they gear up for the upcoming event in Abeokuta.

The governor stated, “To our young athletes and the whole sports fraternity in Delta State, as reigning champions, I urge you to maintain the ethos of excellence and discipline.”

“You are the pride of our state and the future of our great nation.

Deltа Statе hаs аlwаys bееn аt thе vanguard оf spоrting еxсellenсе in Nigеriа.

We take great pride in our heritage, successfully organizing and emerging as winners of the 2022 National Sports Festival. We have also cultivated many exceptional athletes who consistently bring us honor on both national and international platforms.

Let this instant equally stand as a strong reminder that, regardless of our varied cultures and origins, we are bonded by the Nigerian spirit: more resilient when unified and motivated by shared dreams and ambitions.

I applaud the National Sports Commission and Ogun State, which is hosting the 22nd National Sports Festival, for maintaining this admirable tradition and for their ongoing efforts to foster national unity and athletic prowess.

The governor emphasized, ‘As we accept this torch today, let it kindle within us a fresh sense of hope, enthusiasm, and national pride.’

Previously, the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori, delivered a welcoming speech where he praised the state government for its significant contributions to sports development within the region. He emphasized that the torch symbolizes peace, unity, and the genuine essence of sportsmanship.

Leader of the National Sports Commission delegation, Mrs Ikana Mbora, noted that President Bola Tinubu had, on March 25 2025 in Abuja, flagged off the National Sports Festival with a charge that the NSC take the torch round the 36 States of the federation and Abuja, while preaching unity.

The NSC team has gone round nearly all the states of the federation, including the North-East, North -Central, North -West and South-East, noting that the delegation was currently in South-South zone of the country, having have visited Cross River, Akwa-Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, and on Tuesday in Delta State.
