Former England Selector Ed Smith Appointed Next MCC President

London [UK], May 8 (ANI): Ex-England selector Ed Smith has been appointed as the new president of MCC. His presidential term will last for one year, beginning on October 1 this coming year.

The current president announced his appointment.
Lord King of Lothbury
At the Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Lord’s, Smith was appointed to the position. After accepting the role, he conveyed his joy and pledged to do his utmost for MCC.

“I feel immensely honored to follow in the footsteps of Lord King as the president of MCC. The hallowed grounds of Lord’s have always held a special place in my heart—as a passionate cricket enthusiast, a former player, and later as a selector. I am fully dedicated to dedicating myself entirely to serve both the club and the sport at large with utmost dedication,” he stated in an official release from the MCC.

Lord King, the present MCC president, stated, “My successor fulfills both requirements by being an exceptional first-class cricket player who represented England and a remarkably insightful writer and academic well-prepared to guide MCC through upcoming difficulties. I am immensely delighted to endorse Ed Smith as the next President of MCC starting 1st October 2025.”

Throughout his athletic tenure, Smith represented Kent, Middlesex, and England across a duration of 13 years. Over this timeframe, he amassed close to 13,000 first-class runs, tallying up an impressive 34 hundreds. Additionally, he was part of the Cambridge University team before earning a double first class degree in History upon graduation.

Following his announcement of retirement in 2008, he transitioned into the media industry and authored five books. Additionally, he has served as a host on both radio and TV platforms.

In 2018, he took up the role of chief selector for the England men’s cricket team. Over a period of three years, during which he held this position, England secured their maiden ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup title and achieved success in various forms of the game.

In addition to his other roles, Smith is also engaged in education through the establishment of the Institute of Sports Humanities (ISH). This institute aims to cultivate and motivate both present and future leaders within sports. The ISH collaborates with Loughborough University London to offer an MA program focused on Leadership in Sport.

In his one-year term, the Lord’s will host the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 and will also witness its inaugural women’s Test match between India and England. (ANI)
