In New Delhi [India], on Thursday, India’s ‘Cricket God’ Sachin Tendulkar commented that Rohit Sharma’s career in cricket has been impressive, noting that he has consistently delivered his finest efforts for Indian cricket both as a player and as a captain. ANI reported this.
A day following Rohit Sharma’s announcement of retiring from Test cricket, Tendulkar reminisced about the Hitman’s debut in the longest format of the game.
Wearing the white jersey, Rohit finally took the field in this format during a match against the West Indies in 2013. This Test series was also notable for being Sachin’s final one before retirement.
During Rohit’s early days, he received his first Test cap from the legendary ‘Master Blaster’ at the historic Eden Gardens. He turned the occasion into an unforgettable event by scoring a remarkable 177 runs and earning the Player of the Match honor. Recalling this special moment, Sachin warmly remembered how he greeted Rohit on embarking upon his Test career and expressed wishes for continued success as he leads India in ODIs.
“I recall handing over your Test cap to you back in 2013 at Eden Gardens and later sharing moments with you on the balcony of Wankhede Stadium. Your journey has truly been extraordinary. Since those days until today, you’ve dedicated yourself immensely to Indian cricket both as a player and a leader. Congratulations, Rohit, on an illustrious Test career, and all the very best for whatever comes next,” wrote Sachin on X.
On Wednesday, Rohit turned to social media to declare that he was taking his final bow in red-ball cricket and said goodbye to the format with a brief message: “Hello everyone, I wanted to let you know that I’m stepping away from Test cricket. It has been an incredible honor to wear white for my nation. Thanks for your endless support throughout the years. I’ll keep representing India in ODIs though.”
The journey of this 38-year-old began with a sea adventure and included representing India in 67 Test matches, where he accumulated 4,301 runs with an impressive average of 40.57, including 12 hundreds and 18 fifties. He concluded as India’s 16th highest run-scorer in the longest format. His Test career began impressively with an unforgettable 177 runs against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata in 2013.
During the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) history, spanning across 40 tests, he scored 2,716 runs with an average of 41.15, including nine centuries and eight half-centuries. As India’s leading run-scorer and centurion in WTC matches, he ranks tenth globally for total runs accumulated.
