UEFA is considering changing a Champions League rule that put Arsenal at a disadvantage in their semi-final against PSG. The Gunners finished in the top eight during the group stage, unlike PSG.
Arsenal suffered a 3-1 defeat on aggregate against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-finals and will conclude the 2024/25 season without claiming any trophies.
They also surrendered the Premier League title to Liverpool and bowed out of the FA Cup at the hands of Manchester United, as well as being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle United. This makes it five seasons in a row that they will conclude trophyless.
As per The I, UEFA is contemplating modifications to the Champions League format to avoid scenarios where top-seeded teams like Arsenal have to play their second-leg matches away against opponents such as PSG.
Arsenal placed third in the 36-team group stage launched this season. The leading eight teams secured their spots in the round of 16 automatically.
A draw determines the fixture schedule, giving Arsenal minimal benefit. They encountered Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain at their venue for the initial matches prior to traveling for the return fixtures.
The two powerhouses concluded their participation outside of the direct qualifying positions. Paris Saint-Germain ended up in 15th place, whereas Real Madrid, the reigning champions, secured the 11th spot.
The report also mentions officials discussing potential rule changes. These proposed alterations would ensure that top-seeded teams host their second-leg matches throughout the tournament unless they face another top seed. In such cases, the team with the better overall standing would host the return match.
Another idea that has been floated is giving the group winner a last-16 tie against the lowest-ranked team from the play-offs. Liverpool faced PSG in the round of 16 after an impressive league phase.

The Gunners were playing their second season in Europe’s premier competition after a seven-year absence.
They reached the quarter-final last season but lost to their perennial rivals, Bayern Munich. This season, they were brilliant.
They secured third place during the league stage with only one loss, which was at the hands of the finalist team, Inter Milan. Their sole other defeats came from matches against PSG in the semifinal.
Arteta’s squad thrashed PSV Eindhoven 9-3 in the round of 16 prior to demolishing Real Madrid 5-1 in the quarter-finals.
“It needs to be painful because otherwise, it will recur. We must create additional resources and increase accessibility while also offering more choices. That’s the subsequent phase,” Arteta stated through Arsenal.com.
